Men’s, Women’s, & Mixed OC6 Relay short or Long Course – 8-10 miles (2 – 5-mile laps), OC1 short course.

Join us for a day of outrigger racing, food, fun and entertainment as part of the Kalama Cultural Festival. Racing from the sandy shoreline of Louis Rasmussen Beach Park our purpose is to bring our canoe families together, to enjoy good food, entertainment and to be challenged as athletes. Race Rules: (Please read carefully as this is not your typical race)

  • We prefer not to have a short course (but can be flexible) so please incorporate your youth and novice within your long course relay.
  • There are only two age categories: under the age of 45 and over the age of 45
  • Long Course: There will be two laps on the race course. The race course is originally designed for a 10.2 mile course (5.1 miles each loop) around Sandy Island twice, but conditions and ship traffic that day may not allow this. Instead, we may drop buoys on the Washington side of the Columbia which will equal 10 miles (5 mile loops).
  • Between laps, the boat must come back to the beach and change out at least one paddler. One (or more) paddlers will get out of the canoe and run through a gate where either the same paddlers can return to the canoe or new paddlers can be tagged in.
  • Mixed teams must have at least two paddlers of the same gender at any time.
  • To finish the race one person from the crew must get out and run through the gate.
  • There will be 3 heats allowing 90 minutes for each (weather permitting). A club/team can choose any of the heats to participate in. This will allow a lot of flexibility for a club/team to participate once or in all three races in any of the three categories (women, men, mixed). A single person can race multiple times. This will also allow canoe availability.
  • We prefer to use Spec canoes as they never get used anymore, but we will have an unlimited division. Maybe this will also allow people to paddle in an unlimited that has not done so.
  • OC1, OC2 or SUP can only race one lap and can choose which heat to participate in. They must also start and finish on the beach.
  • RACE SCENARIOS: For the beginner or novice paddler we suggest one lap and change out with another paddler, but for the person who wants to paddle 20.4 miles, we suggest; 1) race on a gender specific team (10.2 miles) then, 2) race with a mixed team (10.2 miles). For the person who wants to steer and paddle these change out races are great. Or Maybe that paddler will race OC1.
  • With 3 Heats there is so much flexibility for all genders, ages and abilities.
  • If you are a single paddler and don’t have a club to paddle with please let us know and we’ll build crews that morning.
