OC6 Huli Instruction Video Released
In 2025, the Hood River Outrigger Canoe Club filmed a comprehensive OC6 huli instruction video at the Hood River Aquatic Center and on the Columbia River. The video focuses on safe, practical techniques for recovering from a capsize and getting paddlers back into the canoe efficiently and calmly. Using clear demonstrations, the crew walks through key steps including counting out paddlers after a huli, paddle stowage, righting the canoe, stabilizing on the ama side, and re entering in a controlled order that prioritizes safety and stability.
The video also covers multiple re entry methods, including leg driven climbs, heel hooks, use of the iako for leverage, and optional tools like step straps for paddlers who need additional support. Special attention is given to cold water considerations, head protection during a huli, and reducing water intake while righting the canoe. The emphasis throughout is on staying calm, taking time, and using whatever techniques are available to get everyone back in safely.
This instructional resource was made possible through a generous grant from the Pacific Northwest Outrigger Racing Canoe Association and is intended to support paddlers across the region in building confidence, safety, and readiness for real world conditions on the water.
